Rory McShane: Paintings, Pottery and Prints
This exhibition is largely a response to the beauty of local trees. Rory records the patterns of light and dark they make, aiming to chime with their sense of energy and change through the seasons. His intention is to get to the essence of things, often by using calligraphic mark-making inspired by oriental ideas about using brush and inks. The immediacy and simplicity of the approach also suits woodcut prints and brush decoration on ceramics. Pottery vessels are often made from local clay, dug from the ditch by the artist's house, a further reflection of the wish to keep a sense of direct involvement with the landscape. There may also be footballers!

He loves the effects and finish of oil paint, including the time it takes to dry and fix, but also enjoys the speed and effect of gouache and acrylic.
